Discussion

Discussion is the communal center of an online class. It's the place where students get to dialogue, debate and engage both one another and their instructor!

Jessup Online puts a large stress on these discussion forums because we believe that online learning is a communal experience.

Attached is an actual poem with certain words removed.

1) Fill in the blanks with your own word choices and post your new poem here (as an attached Word document).

2) Read your classmate’s poems.

How do the word choices affect the mood and meaning of the poem? Consider the connotative and denotative meanings of the chosen words. Ask your classmates about why they made the creative choices they did. You may want to review page 307.
I will post the actual poem later in the week. (See discussion in Moodle for attached poem.)

Compare the poems "There is No Word" by Tony Hoagland and "Love is Not an Emergency" by Erin Belieu. What poetic devices do you see at work in these poems?

Consider the poet's word choice, their use of imagery and metaphor, and where they choose to break their lines. Do they use any alliteration, assonance, or consonance?

How do their choices impact the meaning of the poem? In your opinion, which poem engaged you more as a reader?
